Man charged with harbouring 8 illegal Thai immigrants

ALOR STAR: An entertainment outlet operator today claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of harbouring eight illegal Thai immigrants, all women, in his premises last year.

Then Kam Wooy, 36, from Taman Saga, Alor Mengkudu could be fined up to RM30,000 and jailed a maximum 12 months for each illegal immigrant upon conviction.

The accused, who was unrepresented, claimed trial before Judge Najwa Che Mat.

He was charged with harbouring the eight illegal immigrants — Tassanun Kookid, 20; Warin Ratso, 25; A-Isah Chewae, 27; Sopit Reepon, 29; Apiraporn Pongsai, 22; Jirada Pittathasa, 24; Arteekah Chewae, 27; and Auntika Hongchat, 31.

He allegedly committed the offence at Alive KTV Cafe, No 33, Jalan Kurung 1, Taman Bandar Baru Mergong in Alor Star at 11.10pm on Nov 27 last year

The accused was charged under Section 55E (1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155), which is punishable under Section 55E (2) of the same Act.

Kedah Immigration Department’s deputy public prosecutor Mohd Sharifuddin Abdul Rahman urged the court to impose RM20,000 bail on the accused but the court set bail at RM12,000.

The court fixed Feb 21 for mention.
