Man mistaken for wildboar shot dead in Tenom

TENOM: Police held a man for the death of a man who was shot after being mistaken for a wildboar in the forest near Kampung Kauran in Kemabong here.

Two shotguns, including a bakakuk or homemade shotgun, were recovered following the arrest of the 34-year-old suspect by police in their investigations into the death of Amit Bies, 89, on Wednesday.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Firdaus Francis Abdullah said investigations revealed Amit may have been shot by an acquaintance who was hunting in a forested area.

“The suspect claimed he had fired a shot at what he thought was a wildboar. Instead he heard someone screamed after firing the shot from a distance of about 15m,” Firdaus said.

The hunter had thereafter lodged a police report, accompanied by his brother-in-law,” he said adding a team of policemen were dispatched to the scene where they recovered the man’s body. A weapon was also recovered there.

Firdaus said investigations are continuing.
