Two Datuks in Penang undersea tunnel probe released on bail

PUTRAJAYA: Two Datuks detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as part of its probe into the Penang undersea tunnel project were released on bail on Friday.

Both men, aged 49 and 59, were released on MACC bail of RM200,000 each.

The bail order was granted by Magistrate Aida Kharuleen Azli at the Magistrate's Court here.

The MACC was granted a six-day remand order against the duo on Jan 10 as part of an investigation into the controversial project.

The remand for the first Datuk, a deputy chairman of a property development company, was obtained at George Town’s magistrate's court; while the second Datuk, a senior executive director, had his remand secured in Putrajaya.

Their remand was later extended for five days starting Jan 15.

The 7.2km undersea tunnel is part of a RM6.3 billion project undertaken by Consortium Zenith, which also includes three paired roads.

The project had raised numerous controversies in recent months, especially on the high cost of its RM305 million feasibility study, as well as the 21-month delay in its construction.
