Chinese tourist charged with smoking on AirAsia flight

TAWAU: A Chinese tourist claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here on Friday to a charge of smoking onboard an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to here on Tuesday.

However, no plea was recorded by the 41-year-old accused, Li Jon Ming, when the charge was read before registrar Puspawati Sangut.

Li was charged under Section 100 of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016 for smoking in an aircraft.

Under the law, the offence carries a fine of up to RM25,000 and imprisonment of up to a year upon conviction.

Puspawati granted RM5,000 bail with two local sureties and set Jan 25 for case remention.

The accused, who was represented by Liew Ho Min, has to surrender his passport and report to an investigation officer once a week.

Assistant Superintendent Nur Intan Jamrin prosecuted.
