(Updated) Penang police seize RM6.3mil worth of syabu; arrest two

GEORGE TOWN: Police seized 90 kilograms of syabu worth RM6.3 million in two related raids here and in Bukit Mertajam on Friday.

The first raid was conducted at 4pm in Kota Permai, Bukit Mertajam following a public tip-off of possible illicit activity in the area, said Bukit Aman Narcotics Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh.

Police seized a large stash of syabu while a 31-year-old man who was renting the house was detained to assist in investigation.

Subsequently, a 41-year-old man was arrested near Pulau Tikus the next day at 4am on suspicion of being the Bukit Mertajam man’s accomplice.

Two vehicles and RM3,150 in cash were also seized during the raid. Three bank accounts in the names of the men containing a total of RM500,000 was frozen following the arrest.

Police said the 90kg drugs, largest drug haul in the state this year, may be sold and used by 450,000 drugs addicts.

"We have yet to ascertain how long they have been involved with the syndicate but we believe that the syndicate was involved in trafficking drugs in the northern region apart from Kuala Lumpur," he said in a press conference today.

Both men tested positive for drugs at the time of arrest but only one had a previous record.

The duo were remanded for six days and the case was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.
