Penang undersea tunnel probe: Engineering consultant remanded

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today obtained a five-day remand order against an engineering consultant for alleged graft.

The 50-year-old woman will be remanded until Jan 28 to assist the commission's probe into the controversial Penang undersea tunnel project.

The remand order was granted by Magistrate Fatina Amyra Abdul Jalil at Putrajaya Magistrate's Court.

The suspect, whose face was covered with a jacket, arrived at the court at 9.50am.

She was detained at the Putrajaya MACC headquarters at 6.30pm yesterday as part of the investigation into the proposed Penang undersea tunnel project studies.

The woman was believed to be a senior consultant in a company responsible for the project.

She was believed to have been involved in the preparation of documents for false claims for the feasibility studies on the RM305 million project to the Penang state government.

MACC is also identifying whether other individuals were also involved in abetting with the preparation of the false documents.

With the arrest, three individuals have so far been hauled up by the MACC to assist the investigation.

Previously, two company officials, both Datuks, were detained on Jan 9 and later released on bail after 10 days.

The 7.2km undersea tunnel is part of a RM6.3 billion project, which also includes three paired roads.

The project had raised numerous controversies in recent months, especially on the high cost of its RM305 million feasibility study, as well as the 21-month delay in its construction.

MACC had previously said it was probing the possibility that politicians could also have been involved in the controversy.
