Kedah police probing 'ustazah' involved in RM178,600 umrah scam

ALOR STAR: Police are still probing reports lodged against a woman, said to be an ustazah, who is believed to have conned 25 prospective umrah pilgrims.

Kedah police Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief, Superintendent Chan Teik Paing however said no arrest has been made so far.

He said police have thus far received a total of nine reports lodged by 12 victims on Saturday.

Chan added that police also received a report from a woman who was responsible for collecting payment for the umrah package.

“We are probing the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating following reports lodged by the victims and from the woman who was responsible for collecting payment.

“She claimed that the money has been handed to the company that handled the packages in Kuala Lumpur,” he said when contacted.

It is understood that the loss incurred by the 25 victims is about RM178,600.

Chan said police will record statements of the victims, including the umrah package organiser.

It was reported earlier that 12 individuals lodged a police report against the 'ustazah' after they failed to obtain a refund from her following a failed umrah trip last month.

The report was lodged at the Kota Setar police headquarters, where the victims had urged police to take action against the woman.

Last month, the New Straits Times reported that the 25 victims had sought help from the Consumers Association of Kedah (Cake) after failing to depart to the Holy Land to perform umrah.
