Shots fired at cable thieves in getaway car

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police were forced to fire a warning shot at a getaway car to stop two cable thieves in their tracks.

However, no injuries were reported.

The incident happened about 3pm today when the duo, who have been actively stealing cables in the Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) and Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) districts, attempted to ram into the police.

This came after police arrested one of the gang members during a raid at a hotel in Sungai Rambai here.

Sources said another two gang members fled the scene in a car, and while doing so, attempted to ram into the raiding party.

“We were forced to fire a warning shot which hit the tyre of the getaway car.

“Despite a punctured tyre, they continued to drive off for about 10km until the car skidded at Jalan Pinggiran Alma.

“We managed to catch one of them while the other ran away into a nearby oil palm plantation,” the source said, adding that the suspects were from Sungai Kob in Karangan, Kulim.

Meanwhile, Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid confirmed the incident.

He said the case was being investigated as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code.
