Remand of 3 detained for graft extended to Feb 14

PUTRAJAYA: The remand of three individuals, who were detained for alleged graft involving a landscaping project, has been extended for four days until Feb 14.

The trio were a 44-year-old deputy general manager of UEM Sunrise and two contractors.

Magistrate Izzatul Nawwarah Idrus granted the remand extension application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at Putrajaya magistrate's court here.

Four other individuals -- a 55-year-old project director of UEM Sunrise; a 34-year-old female personal assistant to the deputy general manager; and two other contractors -- were released on MACC bail with two sureties each.

The project director and the two contractors were released on a bail of RM100,000 each, while the personal assistant to the deputy general manager was released on RM40,000 bail.

The suspects, clad in orange MACC lock-up attire, arrived at the court at 9.25am.

On Feb 6, the seven suspects were remanded for five days to facilitate investigation into a RM44 million corruption case involving a landscaping project, which took place between 2013 and 2017.

The deputy general manager, his personal assistant and the project director were arrested at the Johor MACC on Feb 5.

The four contractors were detained at MACC Shah Alam, Klang and Melaka on the same day.

It was reported that the deputy general manager and the project director had allegedly awarded a landscaping project worth RM44 million to eight companies through three stages, namely e-bidding, one-off contract and maintenance.

The duo also allegedly solicited for bribes in exchange for ensuring the contractors would receive full payment for their monthly claims.

Investigators also found suspicious payments of more than RM2.4 million in the bank accounts of the deputy general manager and his wife, made through four contractors.
