REMBAU: A mentally ill man who ran amok and hurt his aunt in Kampung Gaing, Pedas, here. died when being transported by police to Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar (HTJ) Seremban, yesterday.
The 38-year-old man had earlier run amok and hit his aunt, who is in her 50s, on her head with a blunt object.
Acting Rembau police chief Assistant Superintendent Nazruel Ekram Abu Shari said the man's father contacted the Pedas police station to ask for help at 4.45pm.
He said two policemen went to the location, detained the man, and brought him on a patrol car to HTJ for treatment, while the father followed in another car behind them.
"On the way, the man who was seated at the back with a policeman was quiet and thought to be sleeping. Upon arrival at the hospital, however, he was unconscious.
"Upon examination, doctors confirmed that he had died. Further checks revealed that he had a history of mental illness."
Nazruel said the man's body was handed over to the Forensics Unit for post-mortem, and the case has been classified as sudden death.
