Former councillor files defamation suit against 2 MPSP councillors

GEORGE TOWN: Former Seberang Jaya Municipal councillor filed a defamation suit today against two of its councillors who had allegedly defamed him in a WhatsApp message.

Northern Indian Congress (NIC) president G. Rajasegar filed the suit about 10.15am at the High Court registry, together with his lawyer R. Mahendren.

NIC was named as the second plaintiff.

Rajasegar named H'ng Mooi Lye and Dr Amar Pritpal Abdullah, the first defendant and second defendants respectively, claiming that they had defamed him in a message in WhatsApp group named "AM & HOD MPSP in May 2017 with the intention of tarnishing his reputation and dignity as well as that of NIC.

In the statement of claim, Rajasegar said H'ng had in the message alleged that he (Rajasegar) was abusing his power as a former MPSP councillor while the second defendant had alleged that NIC was a money making non-governmental organisation.

"I have also lodged a police report last night.

"They have made remarks with the intention of tarnishing my reputation and dignity in the WhatsApp group, Hence I have filed the suit to seek justice," he said today.

When contacted, Amar said that he would answer the allegations made against him through his lawyer.

"I have not received any notice as of yet. Once I do, I will talk to my lawyer," he said.

H'ng refused to comment.
