Namewee freed on police bail

KUALA LUMPUR: Controversial rapper and film director Namewee was freed on police bail today after being remanded since last Friday.

Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, 34, was released from the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 1.45pm.

Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shaharuddin Abdullah, confirmed the matter and said police have completed their questioning. However, he declined to elaborate on the outcome of the investigation.

Meanwhile, efforts to interview Namewee proved futile. The musician, who donned a grey shirt and a face mask, evaded reporters and made his way into a waiting car as soon as he exited the police headquarters’ main doors.

Namewee was arrested under Section 298A of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.

He was arrested to enable police to conduct an investigation following four reports lodged against his video clip, ‘Like A Dog’, which was deemed to be insulting.

The clip, which was released in conjunction with Chinese New Year, among others showed him wearing a dog mask and performing with the Prime Minister’s Office headquarters in Putrajaya as the backdrop.
