3 inmates escape from Kg Selamat drug rehab centre; manhunt launched

TASEK GELUGOR: Three men escaped from a drug rehabilitation centre in Kampung Selamat this morning, triggering a manhunt stretching from here to Kedah.

The trio, aged 35, 37 and 52, who were admitted into the Kampung Selamat Cure and Care Rehabilitation Centre (CCRC) about two months ago, bolted after the subuh prayers.

They were last spotted still wearing the centre's red T-shirts bearing the words 'CCRC Kg Selamat' at the back and dark blue sweat pants.

Seberang Prai Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said checks showed they had climbed the 10-foot high barb-wired fencing before running into a nearby oil palm plantation.

He said the supervisor only noticed the trio's 'disappearance' about 7am.

“We have launched a manhunt for them.

“At 11.45am, the K-9 unit from the state police headquarters came in to join the search.

“We have found a pair of pants on the fence and a pair of gloves outside. We believe these items were used during their escape,” he said.

Noorzainy said the K-9 unit followed the trail of the escaped inmates until Padang Serai area before losing their scent.

“We have alerted our Kedah counterpart to help locate the trio,” he added.
