Prosecution rests in Kim Jong-nam murder trial

SHAH ALAM: After 39 days, the prosecution team finally wrapped up its case in the trial of the alleged assassins of Kim Chol, the alias of the estranged brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad told the court that the prosecution rests its case after having summoned 34 witnesses since Oct 2, last year.

“We offered 93 witnesses to the defence team for their case,” he said.

Judge Datuk Azmi Ariffin fixed June 11 for both teams to submit their written submissions.

“The court also fixes June 27 to June 29 for both teams to present their oral submissions before I pronounce the decision at the end of the prosecution case soon,” he said.

On March 1, Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Doan were charged at the Sepang magistrate’s court with murdering Kim Chol, 45, with four others still at large.

Kim Chol was later established to be Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong-un.

The duo allegedly committed the offence at klia2’s departure hall at around 9am on Feb 13, 2017.

The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries a mandatory death penalty.
