Special Branch to share intel on 1MDB

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal police Special Branch (SB) Department is ready to assist other departments within the force and related enforcement agencies on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) investigation.

Besides the 1MDB case, the SB will also share intelligence findings to help resolve other misappropriation cases.

The department's director, Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador, said he will place a reminder to all SB officers to discharge their responsibilities in line with the provisions of the existing laws.

“My main goal as the director is to ensure all my men always carry out their duties with full responsibility for the safety of the nation.

”Every action to be taken must be in line with the provisions of the law set by the Police Act,” he said when contacted today.

For the initial stage, he said the main goal of the SB is to be on standby and to assist the relevant authorities in any investigations involving malpractice, fraud, crime and other issues.

“For the time being, I have to look into all relevant documents through intelligence and investigations that have been carried out before I can provide further details,” he said.

Abdul Hamid, who has served the force for 37 years, was transferred out from Bukit Aman to the Prime Minister’s Department in 2015 at the height of the investigations into the 1MDB scandal, in the past administration.

He was appointed as the new SB chief today to replace Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff who is set to retire in September.

Two days ago, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government set up a 1MDB special investigation taskforce which included Abdul Hamid, former Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail; former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed and newly appointed MACC chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull.
