Customs Dept nets 1.1 tonnes of meth worth RM71 mil; biggest haul in its history [NSTTV]

NILAI: The Customs Department seized 1.187 tonnes of methamphetamine worth RM71 million from a mini supermarket in Seri Kembangan, Selangor last Tuesday – the biggest drug haul ever made by the department.

Its director-general Datuk Seri T Subromaniam said the operation – which was conducted in collaboration with Bukit Aman’s Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department – also seized 750 grams of heroin worth RM120,000.

In the raid on Tuesday at 7pm, intelligence team officers stormed a premises and arrested five men aged between 22 and 48.

"The five suspects comprised three Myanmar and two local men who had just received a container," Subromaniam said at a media conference held at the Customs Department’s Narcotics Branch at Kampung Jijan Tengah here today.

He said checks found 1,187 yellow packets, each one weighing one kilogramme.

"Further inspection found that the packages contained methamphetamine. In total, the packets contained 1.187 tonnes of the drug worth more than RM71 million," he added.

Subromaniam said that an interrogation of the suspects led to the arrest of the supermarket company director, a 31-year-old woman from Cheras, Selangor, on the same day.
