Indonesian worker jailed 8 months for kissing 9-year-old girl

PUTRAJAYA: An Indonesian worker was sentenced to eight months’ jail by the Special Court for Sexual Crimes against Children after he pleaded guilty to kissing a 9-year-old girl on the forehead and lips.

The incident took place inside the toilet of a restaurant in Shah Alam, Selangor, on June 19.

Judge Yong Zarida Sazali sentenced the accused, Zulham Syahputra, 26, to eight months’ jail from the day of arrest on June 20.

The case was investigated under Section 14 (d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carried a jail term of not more than 20 years and whipping.

The accused was found to have kissed the forehead and lips of the victim with sexual intention. The frightened victim pushed the suspect away and informed her mother and stepfather about the incident.

The victim’s stepfather lodged a police report and the suspect was arrested on June 20.

The suspect, who was not represented by a lawyer, had appealed to the court for lighter sentence, stating that he had to provide for his family in Indonesia.

However, deputy public prosecutor Nordalina Ali requested the court to order a fair sentence as a lesson for accused.
