5 Vietnamese men charged with breaking into Jerlun supermarket

JITRA: Five Vietnamese men were charged with breaking into a supermarket in Ayer Hitam, Jerlun, early July, at the magistrate's court here today.

However, no plea was recorded from Nguyen Van Hop, Ha Van Khanh, Pham Van Xuan, Nghiem Van Long and Tran Xuan Thong, as all of them, aged between 20 and 30, did not understand Bahasa Malaysia.

According to the charge sheet, the five allegedly broke into a supermarket in Ayer Hitam and stole cash amounting to RM1,000 at about 3 am on July 2.

The charge was made under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking read together with Section 34 of the same Act which carries a jail term of up to five years, which can be extended up to 14 years if the offence intended to be committed is theft.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Aqharie Durranie Aziz requested the court not to offer bail to the accused, who were unrepresented.

Magistrate Mohd Hadi Hakimi Harun fixed Sept 19 for mention of the case to appoint an interpreter. -- BERNAMA
