15 dead from suspected alcohol poisoning

SUNGAI BULOH: 15 men in Selangor died from suspected alcohol poisoning as at 5pm after consuming what could have been tainted liqour.

In confirming this, Selangor police chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor in a statement added that 33 others were admitted to various hospitals in Selangor due to the same cause.

He informed that police however were still waiting for a full post-mortem report, adding that initial investigation found that all victims were hospitalised after consuming alcohol.

Seven of the victims who died were in Sungai Buloh, four in Gombak and four in Kajang.

Following a surge of reports on those admitted to hospitals in Selangor after consuming alcohol, police initiated an investigation and today confiscated at least 20 boxes of various alcohol brands from two grocery shops in Jalan Industri 6, Kampung Baru Sungai Buloh, here.

Checks by NSTP at the scene found that raids were conducted at about 1pm at the two premises run by foreigners from Nepal and Myanmar.

It is learnt that seizures were made to facilitate investigation as well as to run tests on the liquor.

Two Bangladeshis, believed to be workers of a neighbouring shop, were taken to a police station to have their statements recorded.

Earlier, NSTP visited the area known as “Pasar Bangla” and found two premises suspected of selling alcohol.

However, both stores were closed today.

The two premises are located near to the hostel and workplace of a victim who died yesterday.
