Remand extended for three exotic animal smugglers

KANGAR: The remand order for three exotic animal smugglers, detained last Saturday, has been extended two more days as authorities delve deeper into their network.

The three Indonesian nationals were taken to the Kangar court by the Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) officials this morning.

It was reported that the state Customs Department arrested the trio off Kuala Perlis waters, about to smuggle in 435 exotic animals into the country on a fishing boat.

Among the animals rescued were orang utans, sugar gliders, baby albino foxes, baby crocodiles, birds of paradise, white cockatoos, eclectus parrots, long-tailed parakeets and great arguses.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967 for importing uncustomed and prohibited goods, and Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
