Najib, Irwan, Hasanah to be charged with six counts of CBT

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and former Treasury secretary general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah are expected to be charged with six counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) over funds belonging to the Malaysian government amounting to RM6.6 billion.

Former director-general of the Research Division in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Hasanah Ab Hamid, is also expected to face a similar charge, involving government funds totalling US$12.1 million.

According to the court case list, their cases will be mentioned before sessions court judge Azman Ahmad.

It is understood that Najib and Irwan will be jointly charged with the offences, allegedly committed between Dec 2016 and Dec 2017; while Hasanah is alleged to have committed the offences between April 2018 and May 2018.

The charges against them were framed under Section 409 of the Penal Code (criminal breach of trust by a public servant or agent).

Retired Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram, appointed as senior deputy public prosecutor, will lead the prosecution team.

Journalists had gathered at the court complex as early as 6.30am and queued in two rows for registration to enter the courtroom and the video-linked room.

The court has made available 21 passes for local and foreign journalists to enter the courtrooms; and 40 passes for reporters to view the proceedings from the video-linked room.
