Court adjourns proceedings for Najib's lawyer to study charges

KUALA LUMPUR: The counsel of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has asked for a half-an-hour stand down to go through the charges faced by his client.

Lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah made the application a few minutes after the court began its session at 9.17am.

In his application, Shafee said he only received the copy of the charge sheets five minutes before 9am and needs to digest and explain the impact to his client.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram, who is leading the prosecution team, did not object to the application.

Judge Azman Ahmad then allowed a 30-minute stand down.

Najib and former Treasury secretary general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah are expected to be charged with six counts of criminal breach of trust over funds belonging to the Malaysian government amounting to RM6.6 billion.
