IGP: 83 people arrested over temple violence

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 83 people have been arrested in connection with the violence at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya last week, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

"As at 8am today, the number of suspects arrested has increased to 83. We will issue another notice after 8am tomorrow if there are new developments," he said during a press conference at the police academy, here, today (Dec 4).

It was reported yesterday that 68 people were arrested in connection with the fracas, which resulted in several injuries and property damage.

Asked whether the 15 new arrests involved indviduals who were wanted by police, Fuzi declined to elaborate.

"All of them were involved in the incident at the temple. Efforts to hunt down the suspects are continuing," he said.

Yesterday, Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department issued and distributed pictures of 28 witnesses wanted to facilitate the probe into the violence.

In the incident on Monday, a total of 23 vehicles were torched and glass windows were shattered at a nearby mall.

One firefighter was seriously injured in the incident but is reported to be in stable condition.
