Adib's death: First inquest case management set for Jan 18

KUALA LUMPUR: An inquest to identify the cause of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim’s death will have its first case management at the Shah Alam court on Jan 18.

This was announced by Solicitor General III of Malaysia, Datuk Mohamad Hanafiah Zakaria, when contacted by the news media today.

Mohamad Hanafiah, who is also head of the appellate and trial division at the Attorney General’s Chambers, said the papers for the inquest were filed on Thursday at the Registrar’s office in Shah Alam.

He added that the proceedings will be held at the Coroner’s Court in Selangor’s capital.

On Thursday, Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said in a Facebook post that an inquest will be conducted to determine Muhammad Adib’s cause of death.

He said police have unearthed specific findings in their investigations, which could only be revealed in court.

An inquest is a legal inquiry into a death when its cause is unknown, violent or ‘unnatural’.

On Nov 27, Adib and other rescuers from the Subang Jaya Emergency Response System (EMRS) unit were deployed to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya to put out a vehicle fire.

However, Adib was dragged out of the vehicle and set upon by rioters.

He was later rescued by members the public who rushed him to the Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) for treatment. He was later transferred to the IJN to receive further treatment.

He died on Dec 17, which led police to classify the case as murder.

Police subsequently arrested 106 people to facilitate a probe. Four men, aged between 21 and 24, were the latest to be released from remand on Dec 10.
