Terengganu assemblyman arrested over false RM500k claims probe

KUALA TERENGGANU: A state assemblyman, who is also a Datuk, was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today over false claims involving RM500,000.

The 54-year-old man was detained at the Terengganu MACC headquarters around 5pm after he gave his statement to investigators.

He was arrested under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

The assemblyman is believed to have submitted claims amounting to RM500,000 last May to a district Land and Mines Office for expenses for 32 programmes. Checks allegedly showed that the programmes did not take place.

Prior to his arrest, a district officer and a youth group chairman were remanded on Jan 8 and Jan 13 over the same investigation.

Meanwhile, Terengganu MACC director, Mohd Zaki Hassan, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.

He said MACC will apply for a remand order against the suspect at the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court to facilitate further investigation.
