Farmer gets four years for robbing elderly woman

ALOR STAR: A farmer was sentenced to four years in prison by the Sessions Court here today for robbing an elderly woman of her motorcycle last year.

Judge Juraidah Abbas handed down the sentence after the accused, Muhammad Shafiq Abdul Rahman, 21, pleaded guilty to the charge that was read to him by a court interpreter.

The accused was ordered to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest on Jan 3.

The accused was charged with robbing Kim Din Chan, 61, at Kampung Paya Lipai, Sungai Tiang, Pendang, near here at 3pm on Dec 25 last year.

According to the facts of the case, the accused pushed the victim into a river before making off with her Yamaha 125LC motorcycle.

The accused was charged under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery, which provides for a jail term of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Rehab Abdul Shukur prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
