Senior citizen arrested with RM30k worth of fireworks, firecrackers

PASIR MAS: A senior citizen was arrested with more than RM30,000 worth of fireworks and firecrackers at a house in Kampung Kedai Lama, Rantau Panjang on Saturday.

The 72-year-old man was picked up by a 15-member team from the General Operation Force’s border intelligence unit, whom raided his house following tip-off from the public.

Pasir Mas district police deputy chief Superintendent Ismail Jusoh said the suspect was busy transferring the contraband into his sport utility vehicle, which was parked in front of his house.

He said checks showed the various brands and types of firecrackers and fireworks were packed in 44 boxes and five gunny sacks.

“We believed that the contraband was smuggled into the state from the neighbouring country to be sold at the local market for the Chinese New Year celebration.

“Checks showed the suspect has past records of committing the same offence,” he told reporters here today.

Ismail said the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the of the Explosive Act 1957, which carries the maximum jail term of seven years of RM10,000 fine or both upon conviction.

“This is the first of such case recorded this year,” he said
