'Tan Sri' in temple land probe out on MACC bail

PUTRAJAYA: The ‘Tan Sri’ who was remanded over the development of a land owned by the Sri Mahamariamman Devasthanam in Kuala Lumpur has been released today.

Magistrate Noraisyah Mohd Yusof dismissed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) application to extend his remand for another seven days.

The court also ordered the wheelchair-bound Tan Sri to be brought to the hospital for a medical check-up.

He was released under MACC bail.

However, the court allowed the graft-buster’s application to extend the remand of another two, including the Tan Sri’s son until Friday.

Counsel Datuk S. Devanandan who represented the Tan Sri said his client had given full cooperation to the MACC in its probe.

“There is no reason for MACC to further detain my client as he has given his full cooperation,” he said.

It was understood that three individuals were responsible in the management of a Hindu temple located in Batu Caves, Selangor.

The trio were arrested by the MACC to assist in the probe of a questionable deal involving a plot of land measuring 1.6 hectares belonging to the temple.

It was reported that a team of MACC officers raided the house of the temple's top official, temple office as well as the home of another senior officer alleged to be involved in the deal.

Previously, a PKR leader urged the MACC to investigate allegations of misappropriation involving the temple fund alleged to have been committed by the temple committee chairman.

Sri Mahamariamman Devasthanam manages one of the oldest temples in the country, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple along Jalan Bandar, Kuala Lumpur.

The board also manages the Batu Malai Sri Murugan Temple in Batu Caves and the Kortumalai Vinayagar Temple along Jalan Persiaran Maybank in Kuala Lumpur.
