Police to record statements over march featuring LGBT

KUALA LUMPUR: Three individuals believed to be involved in a march held in conjunction with the International Women’s Day celebration last week, which reportedly saw participation from the LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders) community, will have their statements taken by the police on Monday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said six individuals and three organisers of the event had their statements taken so far.

“Another three will have their statements recorded on March 18,” he said at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters here today.

It was earlier reported that Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said that police would call the event organisers to assist in the investigation according to Section 9(5) Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for organising the march without prior permission.

Some 1,000 people were reported to have participated in the March 9 gathering which started near Sogo shopping complex before heading to Masjid Jamek.

It was understood that participants included members of international and local NGOs including Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO), Sisters In Islam (SIS), social activists and students.

The assembly was also reportedly joined by LGBT activists who waved rainbow flags at the event.

They called for an end to purported gender discrimination, violence towards women and gender equality.
