Unemployed man arrested in ganja bust

MIRI: An unemployed man's luxurious life came to an end when he was nabbed by police in a raid at his home in Jalan Permai Jaya last night, which led to the discovery of 382 grammes of ganja hidden in a bedroom.

The raid at about 1.30pm, followed intelligence report and monitoring the suspect's movement who was the mastermind behind a ganja distribution operation in the district over the past year.

Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) head Superintendent Sahar Abdul Latif, said the seized ganja was estimated to be worth RM7,640 in the market and believed to be for local distribution.

"In the raid, we found a black plastic bag hidden inside a drawer in the suspect's bedroom. Inside, there was another transparent plastic bundle of compressed slabs of dried leaves weighing 320 grams, believed to be ganja.

"Further checks led to the discovery of another closed plastic container, inside which were 23 transparent packages containing dried leaves, believed to be ganja too, weighing 62 grams. We believe the ganja is already processed in small packages for distribution," he said in a statement, here, today.

Sahar added the suspect had no previous criminal record, while his urine drug screen was negative.

"The police also seized the suspect's wallet and MyKad to assist in the investigation, while his motorcycle Yamaha RXZ, believed to be used for drug trafficking was also confiscated," he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952 which, upon conviction, is punishable by death.
