Teens charged with murdering Cradle Fund CEO released on bail

SHAH ALAM: Two teenagers who were charged with murdering Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Nazrin Hassan have been released with RM50,000 bails, respectively.

High Court judge Datuk Ab Karim Ab Rahman made the decision today after allowing an application by the teenager’s biological father.

Ab Karim in his decision said the teenagers aged between 14 and 17 would not abscond from the trial.

“Allowing bail for underaged accused charged with murder is normal.

“Considering the family background and their academic achievements, the court believed both of them would not repeat the same offence or disturb the prosecution witness,” he said.

He said the duo needed to have two different sureties, not from family members, who will testify in the trial.

“They have to report at the nearest police station every week,” he said, adding the court also imposed a curfew order from 6pm until 6am.

On March 4, the teens were jointly charged with Nazrin’s widow Samirah Muzaffar, over the murder at the Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court.

Based on the charge sheet, the trio together with Indonesian national Eka Wahyu Lestari, who is still at large, had allegedly committed the crime at the family’s house in Mutiara Damansara between 11.30pm on June 13 and 4am on June 14 last year.

Nazrin’s death was initially thought to have been caused by an explosion of his mobile phone that led to a fire in the bedroom.

However, the case was later reclassified as murder after Fire and Rescue Department investigations found traces of accelerant in the bedroom.

Police then detained Samirah and her ex-husband, as well as several other people, as part of the investigation into Nazrin’s death. They were, however, released after being remanded for a week.

Nazrin’s body was later exhumed for a second post-mortem examination. Police had remained tightlipped over the results of this second examination.
