Penang Undersea Tunnel graft case: 'Datuk Seri' to be charged tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman with the title ‘Datuk Seri’ will be charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court tomorrow in relation to the RM6.3 billion Penang Undersea Tunnel project.

The 38-year old businessman would be charged with allegedly accepting RM19 million as inducement to cover up investigations into the mega tunnel project.

It is learnt that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) received the green light from the Attorney-General Chambers to prosecute the man.

Sources revealed that the man received the payment over three stages within two months in 2017.

“The man was arrested by the MACC in February last year for accepting the money from the project’s main contractor after he claimed that he could help them to ‘settle’ with the commission.

“The company had paid the amount of RM19 million in stages from July to August 2017.

“The first payment of RM2 million was paid in July 2017 and the second payment worth RM15 million was made later the same month, while the balance of RM2 million in August the same year,” the source said.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Azam Baki confirmed that the man would be charged tomorrow at 9am.

He said the man faces three charges under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
