Man loses nearly RM5,000 to TAC scam

KUANTAN: A man ended up almost RM5,000 poorer, after falling prey to a phone scam tactic.

State Commercial Criminal Investigation Department chief Superintendent Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the 37-year-old victim claimed that he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number at 1.10pm yesterday.

"The suspect claimed he had entered the phone number by mistake and requested the victim to send the TAC number back to him.

"The victim claimed that he received six TAC numbers consecutively every five minutes, all of which were forwarded to the suspect's number," he told reporters, here, today.

Mohd Wazir said the victim realised he had been had, upon finding out that one of the TAC messages involved a withdrawal of a large amount of money.

He then checked his online account and found a sum of RM4,979.70 had been transferred into an account belonging to an unknown individual.

The victim lodged a report at the Jerantut District Police Headquarters (IPD) yesterday afternoon.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years and whipping, and a fine if convicted. — BERNAMA
