30 cops nabbed for drug abuse

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador today revealed that, since January, about 30 policemen have been nabbed for drug abuse.

“Years ago, drug abuse was our number one enemy. (But) what happened?

“We can see that the number of addicts (in the country) is doubling.

“Not only the common man, but also my own men,” he said after he launched the Autism Guideline roadshow here today.

He said each week there were policemen high on drugs being arrested.

“We accept the fact that drug abuse in this country is at a breaking point.

“If we do not check it now seriously, it will reach the level of Colombia.

“That’s how bad it is,” said the nation’s top cop.

Despite painting a grim picture, Hamid said he would crack down hard on the drug menace.

“Our raids have produced many success, where hundreds of kilogramme of drugs and millions of ringgits in assets were confiscated and action taken under the Anti-Money Laundering Act to cripple syndicates.”

He said the police were in talks with the government on how to further reduce the accessibility that drug smugglers and traffickers had to the local market.

“A holistic approach is needed, once and for all, to ensure whatever we are doing can bring the desired results.”

Hamid said illicit drug manufacturers had become more bold in the production and distribution of the contraband which was now being done in rented terrace houses.

He also Malaysia was working with neighbouring countries to combat the drug menace.

“It has been on-going; be it bilateral, trilateral or through Aseanapol.

“But, many drugs such as Eramin and syabu are also being produced here.”
