Two men arrested from khat protest rally in Brickfields

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have arrested two individuals to record their statements over the protest against khat in Tamil schools rally held at Little India, Brickfields.

The two men were arrested after the crowd at the rally was told to disperse at around 7.30pm.

Brickfields district acting police chief Superintendent Arifai Tarawe said the rally was held without the approval of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

“The two men were arrested to record their statements and have been brought to the Brickfields police headquarters.

“They will be investigated under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,” he told the reporters at the location of the rally.

Arifai added that the rally, which started at 7pm, was attended by approximately 500 participants who came to protest at the Water Fountain in Little India.

“The police did not permit for the rally to be held due to safety reasons and to avoid any untoward incidents as well as traffic congestion.

“The rally however, was held peacefully. There were no unwanted incidents and we have told the participants to disperse.

“The roads that are closed and re-diverted will be reopened for traffic,” he said.
