Two NRD staff plead not guilty to bribery

TAWAU: Two registration assistants from the National Registration Department (NRD) pleaded not guilty to soliciting a RM2,000 bribe at the Special Corruption Court here, today.

The accused, Azmi Amir Lunji, 42, and Yuliana Saat, 44, claimed trial after the charge was read to them separately before Judge Abu Bakar Manat.

According to the charge sheet, Azmi and Yuliana who are both attached to the Semporna NRD branch had each asked for a RM2,000 bribe from one Sufiah Said on April 26, 2017.

They allegedly committed the offence as an inducement for them to accept, process and approve identification card applications for the woman's twin children aged 12 years old.

The accused were charged under Section 17 (a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

MACC prosecuting officer, Mohd Faliq Basirudin prosecuted, while counsels Ariel Christopher Dasan represented Azmi and Datu Baginda Laja represented Yuliana.

Earlier, Mohd Faliq requested for RM10,000 bail for both accused and for their passports to be surrendered to the court.

He also requested the court to issue a restraining order for both accused not to disturb and get close to the prosecution's witness.

Abu Bakar then fixed bail at RM10, 000 with one surety for each accused and ordered them to report to the MACC office once in two months.

He set Nov 15 for re-mention of the case.
