Najib's 1MDB trial halted briefly

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) corruption trial was adjourned at 11.30am today to allow the former prime minister to seek treatment for his eyes.

This after High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah allowed an application by Najib’s lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah to allow his client to see a doctor.

Shafee said Najib’s eye infection was probably due to the haze.

“I hope the court will allow my client to seek treatment for his eyes. He is suffering from the same symptoms he had previously, conjunctivitis. He has got an appointment with a specialist at about 11am,” he added.

Shafee said Najib had decided to seek treatment as he was also suffering from a runny nose.

Collin ordered the hearing to continue at 2.30pm today. The court then resumed with Shafee cross-examining key witness Datuk Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin who is Najib’s former special officer.

On Sept 11, the same court had postponed Najib’s trial for two days due to an infection on both his eyes, which rendered him unable to attend the proceedings.

Previously, Najib has been deemed to be medically unfit to attend his corruption trial involving the misappropriation of 1MDB subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd funds after he contracted conjunctivitis.

Najib, 66, is facing four charges of having used his position to obtain gratification totalling RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds and 21 counts of money laundering involving the same money.
