Police looking for main suspect in KK brawl

KOTA KINABALU: Police are looking for a man known as “Derek” in connection with the mass brawl at a shopping mall here yesterday.

In the 6pm incident, the 40-year-old man was said to have incited the brawl when he allegedly attacked a man and his friends using an iron knuckleduster.

Speaking to reporters today, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said closed-circuit television (CCTV) footages showed that the victims were drinking when the suspect approached them.

“Following the brawl, the victims suffered injuries on the face, head and body. It also triggered a mass brawl as others got involved.

“We have recorded statements from the victims. They admitted knowing the suspect but were unsure why he acted violently,” he added.

Omar said police are now tracking down other suspects and estimating the losses incurred by the shop owners.

The case is being probed under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
