Five suspects in elephant killing released on bail, illegal immigrant charged

TAWAU: Five of six men detained for investigations into the death of a male Borneo pygmy elephant off Sungai Udin, Dumpas in Kalabakan were released on police bail, said district deputy police chief Superintendent Nor Azizulkifli Mansor.

"The five will be handed over to the Sabah Wildlife department for them to complete their investigation papers,” he said.

Another, who is an illegal immigrant, was charged under Section 6(1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1963 at the Sessions Court here.

The accused, Osman Ghafar, 48, pleaded not guilty to entering the country illegally before High Court deputy registrar Amir Shah Amir Hassan.

According to the charge sheet, Osman, who is unrepresented, had entered the country without any proper documents.

He committed the offence at an unnumbered house in Felda Umas area in Kalabakan on Oct 2 about 1.30am.

Assistant Superintendent Dayang Azrinawaty Awang Kachee prosecuted, while the court fixed Oct 22 for case management.
