Woman cheated out of RM40,000 in Facebook get rich quick scheme

KEPALA BATAS: A woman was cheated out of RM40,000 in a get rich quick scheme which was advertised on Facebook, recently.

The 37-year-old factory operator is said to have been lured by the advertisement’s promise of a lucrative return on investment.

She contacted an agent of the organisation behind the scheme through WhatsApp to express interest in investing RM5,000.

However, she was then persuaded to increase her investment to RM40,000, which would supposedly earn her a return of RM100,000.

Between Sept 18 and Sept 26, the woman made nine separate transactions to pay the total investment amount. However, after the ninth payment, the agent continued to ask her to make further payments.

It was only then that she realised she had been swindled.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor confirmed the incident, and said that the case is being investigated under Section 420 for cheating.
