Smugglers open fire at Customs boat near Semporna

SEMPORNA: Smugglers were believed to have fired several shots at a Customs Department's boat off Semporna yesterday afternoon.

Details were sketchy but it was learnt that none of the Customs personnel on board were injured in the incident.

District police chief Superintendent Sabarudin Rahmat in a Bernama report said that the shooting happened at 5.30pm in the waters near Pulau Mataking.

"The Customs Dept has lodged a police report in Semporna and we have started an investigation on the matter," he was quoted as saying.

Police did not discount the possibility that the case was related to cigarette smuggling activity.
