Perak Perhilitan seizes protected birds, two arrested

IPOH: The state Department of Wildlife and National Park (Perhilitan) seized 61 birds, including three protected ones, in separate raids in Manjoi here yesterday.

Perak Perhilitan director Yusoff Shariff said the raids were carried out following a tip-off at about 1pm.

“In the first raid in Jalan Taliapi, Kampung Tengku Hussein here, we seized 24 Blue-Crowned Hanging Parrots, 11 Blue-Naped Parrots and a Long Tailed Parakeet.

“The second raid was conducted in Jalan Bunga, Kampung Tengku Hussein, where 19 Rainbow Lorikeets and six Blue-Naped Parrots were seized,” he said when met at his office today.

Yusoff said during the raids, two men aged 40 and 43 were arrested for failing to display any valid permits or licences issued by Perhilitan.

“Both were taken to the Manjoi police station and were later released on police bail last night,” he added.

The case was being investigated under Section 60 (1)(a) and Section 68 (1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act for keeping protected wildlife without licence, which carries a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or jail not exceeding two years, or both.

Yusof said the department would continue to track down those involved in the illegal activity in order to protect the country’s wildlife.
