Food deliveryman jailed for violating MCO, obstructing cops

KUALA LUMPUR: A food deliveryman, who rammed a police patrol car on Monday, pleaded guilty to obstructing a public servant in conducting his duty at the Selayang magistrate’s court here today.

Muhammad Faiz Aiwan Mohamad Saffei, 21, also pleaded guilty to violating the Movement Control Order (MCO) by being present outside without a valid reason.

Magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni sentenced the father of two to one month and two months’ jail for both offences, respectively.

The jail term will run concurrently from the date of his arrest.

According to the charge sheet, the accused together with two others who were still at large, rammed through a police roadblock near the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) at 1.45pm on March 23.

They tried to escape the police by heading towards Bentong, when the Perodua Alza that they were in rammed a barrier at the Gombak toll booth before they lost control and hit a road divider.

For obstructing a public servant, he was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code which carries maximum two years imprisonment and RM10,000 fine or both.

For the second offence under Rule 3(1) of the Rules of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020 he faces a maximum fine of RM1,000 or six months imprisonment or both, upon conviction.

Faiz was among five men at the same court who were also sentenced to one month behind bars after they pleaded guilty to violating the MCO.

Mohd Ikhwan Zainudin, 30, P. Prathabh, 32, B.Sinniah, 37, and Liew Kok Leong, 41, pleaded guilty to the offence which they committed in different areas in Gombak and Kepong.

The accused, who were chained together in the dock, nodded in understanding when the charges were read to them separately by the court translator.

Malaysia is currently under a MCO until April 14.

The MCO among others covered general prohibition of mass movements and gatherings nationwide, travel ban on Malaysians as well as restrictions on tourists entering the country.

During the period, all government and private premises (except essential services), as well as kindergartens, schools, universities are closed.
