Work closely with the police to curb crime

KUALA LUMPUR: All quarters must work closely with the police to prevent irresponsible people or groups from taking advantage of the Covid-19 crisis that is beleaguering the country.

Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said this when he condemned a snatch theft incident that took place at a pharmacy in Klang, Selangor recently.

Lee did not mince his words when he criticised the action of the culprit in taking advantage of the crisis at hand, labelling it as "menangguk di air yang keruh" (taking advantage when someone is in difficulty).

“Hence, business premises’ owners should consider installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and ensure that the device is working in order to prevent accidents or crime.

“CCTV provides strong and useful evidence that will enable the authorities to subsequently prosecute and take action against crime offenders,” said Lee in a statement today.

The foundation, he said, also welcomed stricter enforcement from the police by deploying plain clothes policemen or increasing patrol at areas vulnerable to crime and frequented by the people in obtaining necessities.

“The public have also been advised to remain aware and vigilant with their surrounding especially when they practise social distancing as they que to purchase their necessities during the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“Don’t be careless and too engrossed with your smartphones when you are queueing for your turn,” he said.
