Pub manager charged with drunk driving, assaulting policeman

KUALA LUMPUR: A 38-year-old man was charged at the magistrate's courts here today with drunk driving as well as assaulting a policeman.

Leng Kar Loon, a pub manager, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him before magistrates Puteri Nursheila Rahimi and S. Mageswary.

In the proceeding before Nursheila, the accused was charged with driving his Toyota Avanza under the influence of alcohol, with his blood-alcohol level testing at 200mg/100ml, which was

120mg above the permitted limit of 80mg per 100ml of blood.

The offence was allegedly committed near the Billion roundabout at the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) at 1am on May 21.

He was charged under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum 12 months jail term or maximum RM6,000 fine upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Abdullah Ghazali asked the court to set a RM8,000 bail, but the accused's counsel Tan Kian Peng asked for minimum bail.

The court set RM4,000 bail with one surety and fixed July 1 for mention.

Clad in a white shirt, he appeared calm when ushered into the courtroom by two policemen before he was taken to Mageswary's court for charges under the Police Act and Penal Code.

The father of two was issued with three charges for allegedly committing criminal violence against Lance Corporal Mohd Radhie Md Yatim, 37, by punching and injuring the policeman.

The accused was also charged with throwing a chair and behaving in an unruly manner towards the same policeman at a police station near Jalan Tun H. S. Lee at the same time and date.

The offences falls under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 353 and Section 90 of the Police Act 1967, respectively which carries a maximum 12 months imprisonment or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

Deputy public prosecutor Hanis Anisha Jamaludin asked the court to set RM8,000 bail in one surety but Tan pleaded the court to reduce the amount to RM3,000.

The court set RM3,000 bail with one surety and fixed July 21 for mention.
