'Not related to undersea tunnel or bungalow'

BUTTERWORTH: Police and a number of newsmen have gathered outside the Butterworth Court here this morning as former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng, his wife and a businesswoman are expected to face more charges.

It is learned that the charges today are not related to the Penang undersea tunnel project or the former finance minister's Jalan Pinhorn bungalow.

A morning briefing was held by the police to coordinate their duties for the day.

Media personnel meanwhile waited patiently to get clearance to be allowed entry to the court.

A sign, posted on the main gate of the court building, said all cases at the Sessions and Magistrate's Court, will be heard after 11am today and tomorrow, probably to give way for this case.

It is also learned that DAP told all their supporters not to gather at the court building today to ensure adherence to the physical distancing order in light of curbing the spread of Covid-19.

As of 7.15am, no party leaders or supporters were seen in the court vicinity.

The court is expected to allow a limited number of reporters and photographers into the court complex to observe physical distancing.

So far, Lim is facing two charges for soliciting bribes involving the controversial RM6.3 billion undersea tunnel project.

His wife Betty Chew Gek Cheng is expected to face charges under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act (AMLA) 2001.

Businesswoman Phang Li Koon is also expected to face a fresh charge.
