MMEA foils attempt to smuggle out frozen meat

SEMPORNA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has foiled an attempt to smuggle out 300kg of frozen chicken meat near Pulau Bohey Dulang, here, today.

District MMEA director Norrimi Hassan said the enforcement team stopped a boat while on patrol duty under 'Ops Sejahtera' at 1.30am.

"Upon inspection, 20 boxes of frozen chicken meat were found without export permit from the Malaysia Quarantine and Inspection Services Department.

"The items are believed to be heading to a neighbouring country," he said in a statement.

Norrimi said meat valued about RM2,700.

In another case, the MMEA enforcement team also foiled an attempt to smuggle in RM1,950 worth of contraband cigarettes.

Norrimi said the team seized 30 cigarette cartons from an unregistered pump boat at 1.55am near Pulau Gaya Dulang.

He added that the illicit cigarettes were believed to have been brought in from a neighbouring country.

In both cases, no arrest was made and MMEA estimated both seizures to worth RM12,150.
