Gang members use MITI letter to cross state border, rob businessman in Melaka

MELAKA: Members of 'Geng 36' from Selangor used an International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) letter to cross the Selangor state border to rob a businessman in Melaka.

Their modus operandi involved crossing state lines, which has been barred for all except those with the necessary documentation due to the Movement Control Order 3.0 (MCO 3.0).

This however came to light after police raided a house in Bandar Baru Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur where they were holed out following their criminal act.

Melaka Police Chief Datuk Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said four members of the gang were nabbed three days after they robbed a 54-year-old businessman at his condominium unit in Klebang, Melaka on June 4.

He said following the robbery, a special team was set up and it raided a house in Bandar Baru Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur on Monday (June 7) at about 3.45pm and arrested five members of the gang aged between 27 and 37-years-old.

"Apart from seizing stolen items such as cash, jewellery, a collection of swords and a Range Rover belonging to the victim, two vehicles used by the suspect to commit the robbery, a four-wheel drive Toyota Hilux and Vellfire were also seized, worth about RM1.2 million.

"Investigations also found that they used a letter from MITI to cross state lines," he said in a press conference at the Melaka Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) in Bukit Beruang, here, today.

The press conference was also attended by the state Deputy Chief of Police, Senior Assistant Commissioner Razali Abu Samah.

Abdul Majid said that on the day of the incident, four suspects had gone to the victim's luxury condominium as guests at about 8.30pm.

They proceeded to the businessman's unit and tied him and his wife up.

"The victim and his 42-year-old wife had a knife pointed at them. Also present were their two children aged eight and nine, who were not harmed. They were tied-up for some five hours.

"All the suspects who committed the robbery also did not wear any masks and the knife used as a weapon was also taken from the victim's home," he said.

Commenting further, he said, all the suspects were found to be involved in secret society activities. All were found to have records involving drugs and criminal activities.

"All of them are now remanded for five days to assist in the investigation according to Section 395 (gang-robbery) of the Penal Code and Section 379A of the same code," he said.
