Man jailed 5 years for possessing dangerous weapon - a stingray tail

PASIR MAS: A man was sentenced to five-years jail and whipping after he pleaded guilty to possessing a dangerous weapon - a modified stingray tail – at the Sessions Court here today.

Abdul Halim Samsuddin, 26, made the plea after the charge was read to him before Judge Badrul Munir Mohd Hamdy.

Abdul Halim, who is a carpenter, was accused of owning an approximately 114cm-long stingray tail without a valid reason at a public place next to Sungai Kelantan, Kampung Sat near Tanah Merah at 2pm on July 26.

According to the facts of the case, Abdul Halim was with another man in a car during a police raid at a warehouse.

The accused ran out of the car and tried to escape in the shrubs before he was caught.

Upon checking, police found on him a stingray tail, which had been attached to a handle. The item was kept in his right pocket.

The man also failed to present his MyKad when asked to by the police.

He was charged under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 which carries a minimum five-year jail term and whipping.

The court sentenced the man to five-years imprisonment starting from his date of arrest, July 26, and one stroke of the rotan.
