Jobless man jailed 2 years for kidnapping boy

JOHOR BARU: An unemployed man was sentenced to two years in jail after pleading guilty at the Magistrate's Court here to a charge of kidnapping a seven-year-old boy in May.

Magistrate Mohd Zulhilmi Ibrahim announced the sentence after the accused, Muhammad Rahim Ahmad, changed his plea in a proceeding today.

Zulhilmi ordered the sentence to start on May 31, the day the accused was arrested.

Muhammad Rahim, 26, was accused of kidnapping a seven-year-old boy near Sekolah Agama Taman Scientex in Pasir Gudang at 11.30am on May 11.

He was charged under Section 363 of the Penal Code.

The accused, who was unrepresented, had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge but changed his plea in today's proceeding.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Muhammad Arif Marzuki and Danial Munir appeared for the prosecution.

On May 11, a video of a man kidnapping a boy who was in a religious school uniform went viral on social media.

The man was later apprehended by the public before he was handed over to the police.
